This year, Japan's 'Nihon Hidankyo' won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Institute registered a total of 286 candidates for this year's peace prize, including 197 individuals and 89 organizations.

The Nobel Committee said Hidankyo was given the prize in recognition of his initiative and campaign to build a world free of nuclear weapons. It is an anti-nuclear organization.

This organization started a grassroots anti-nuclear movement with survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Those who survived or were affected in some way by the two nuclear weapons attacks on Japan during World War II in 1945 are collectively known as 'hibakusha'. This organization mainly works with hibakushas.

As another achievement of the organization, the Nobel Committee mentions that they have presented the testimony of eyewitnesses who saw this disaster with their own eyes, from which the world understands that such weapons should never be used again.


Iran's imprisoned human rights activist Nargis Mohammadi won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.

A total of 114 Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded from 1901 to 2024. The number of award winners is 142 with 111 individuals and 31 organizations. The International Committee of the Red Cross received the Nobel Peace Prize three times in 1917, 1944 and 1963. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees received the Nobel Peace Prize twice in 1954 and 1981. In addition, 27 individual organizations have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The prize money is handed over to the winners every year on December 10, the day of Alfred Nobel's death. Prize winners in each case receive a medal, a diploma with certificate and currently 11 million Swedish kroner.

Bangladesh's Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
