According to media reports, at the beginning of this month, the Israeli authorities imposed a ban on the entry of the UN Secretary General into Israel. In this, the whole world became involved in criticizing Israel. A letter was written at the initiative of Chile condemning such actions by Israel. Most of India's neighboring countries in South Asia, as well as West Asia, South America, and Africa signed the letter circulated in the United Nations, but India did not.

According to the report, Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz accused UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on October 2 for not criticizing Iran's missile attack on Israel. The Israeli authorities announced that the Secretary General of the United Nations is not eligible to set foot on the soil of Israel. Then 104 UN member countries and the African Union published a letter condemning Israel.

Such actions undermine the UN's ability to carry out its objectives, including conflict mediation and humanitarian assistance, the letter said. As member states of the United Nations, we call for respect for the leadership of the United Nations and its mission. We reiterate our full support and confidence in the Secretary-General and his work.

Most of the UN Security Council countries signed the letter, but the United States, Britain, Japan, South Korea and India did not.

Analysts say the letter is particularly significant because it is seen as a defense of the UN secretary-general and the UN, not a party to the conflict.

The Ministry of External Affairs did not respond to media requests on why India did not sign the letter.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has criticized the government's move. In a post on social media, Congress chief spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said that it is a mystery why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed the Ministry of External Affairs to take such a stand. It's definitely a shame.

Congress leader P Chidambaram said there is no explanation why India did not sign such a letter. Israel made a grave mistake by restricting access to the UN Secretary General. India should have condemned it. Source: The Hindu
