For the past few weeks, Israel has been expanding its operations in Shia-dominated areas. Eighteen people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Christian-dominated town of Aitour in northern Lebanon on Monday. Immediately after this incident, the United States warned the American citizens.

The secretary general of the Lebanese Red Cross, Georges Ketaneh, told Al Jazeera that his workers were transporting the dead and wounded from Aito village in Jagharta region.

According to him, most of the dead are civilians and the current death toll is 22.

He said the situation in southern Lebanon, which requires strict enforcement of the protections afforded by international law to the residents of southern Lebanon, is extremely difficult.

US warns flights 'will not operate indefinitely'

In a message to Americans on Monday, the Beirut embassy said, 'US citizens in Lebanon are strongly encouraged to leave now'.

The message also said that those who have not decided to leave Lebanon now, the embassy advised them to have emergency plans in place in case the situation worsens.

Of the 86,000 Americans living in Lebanon since Sept. 27, only 1,100 have left Beirut, the State Department said.

The embassy also warned that US flights with Lebanon will not operate indefinitely. At the same time, it called on all citizens living in Lebanon to make a quick decision.

Earlier, the United States issued a travel warning to its citizens in Lebanon after a top Hezbollah commander was killed in an attack in southern Beirut in late July.
