Jumbangla Desk: The Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has seized the bank accounts of more than three hundred influential people in the last two and a half months to prevent money laundering. The organization has entered the field to investigate whether there has been money laundering in different countries from these accounts. Bangladesh Bank believes that it is very possible to get the money back if we get the specific information about the smuggling. However, analysts say, it is not possible to bring back the money only by seizing bank accounts, diplomatic action is needed. Details from a report by Independent TV….

According to the US-based research institute Global Financial Integrity (GFI), during the last 15 years during the Sheikh Hasina government, about 14 lakh crores of rupees have been smuggled out of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Bank and Interim Government took initiative to bring back these money in changed situation. As part of this, the BFIU seized the bank accounts of suspicious persons.

According to the information of the organization, BFIU has seized more than three hundred bank accounts since Sheikh Hasina's escape on August 5. The organization says that this step has been taken so that suspicious persons cannot make financial transactions through these accounts. Apart from this, the organization is investigating whether money laundering has taken place from these accounts or how it has taken place.

Regarding this, Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Husne Ara Shikha said, we have not been given any idea of how long it will take to collect the money through the task force. The matter involves legal processes in different countries, there are cases. This may take time to complete the entire work.

Analysts say there are no examples of money being smuggled back. They advised to give exemplary punishment to the culprits to avoid such incidents in future.

Former Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) Tawfiq Ahmed Chowdhury said that those who launder money are not so stupid that they will keep more money in the account that can be seized by the bank. Money is not actually laundered through any official channel. Stopping business in the country of the trafficker, closing the association with various foreign companies can be used to prevent money laundering.

Last month, the government reconstituted the task force to bring back the money and assets smuggled abroad. Nine members are working in this task force under the leadership of Bangladesh Bank Governor.
