What happened in the BPICC review of egg prices

Jumbangla Desk: According to TCB's daily price list, the price of eggs has dropped from Tk 60 and is now being sold between Tk 48 and Tk 52. Eggs are still being sold at prices higher than the government-fixed price in many areas, which requires the intervention of market watchdogs.

The issues came up in a review meeting on the ongoing activities of selling eggs in the capital's two wholesale markets at the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) office on Tuesday (October 29).

In the meeting, vendors of Kaptan Bazar and Tejgaon wholesale market said that although eggs are sold at the price set by the government in these two markets of the capital , the price of eggs is higher in other markets. Tejgaon market mainly used to send eggs from small and medium farms. But the small and medium farms have now stopped supplying eggs to them as the eggs are being sold at higher prices than the fixed price in the district towns.

Breeders Association of Bangladesh president Mahabubur Rahman said most of the corporate farms are located outside Dhaka in various district towns. The local district administration is asking that the local demand should be met first, then the eggs can be sent to other districts.

He said that a meeting was held at the National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection on October 23 where it was decided that the District Administrators through the Ministry of Commerce would be requested to organize an exchange meeting involving livestock officers, local producers of eggs and marginal farmers.

Kazi Farms Director Kazi Zahin Hasan said that many farms were closed due to the recent floods, resulting in reduced egg production. In 2023, the same situation occurred after the flood. As supply decreases in any competitive market, it is natural that prices rise.

He said that the farmers of the affected district have started breeding again. Broiler chicken production will return to normal within the next month, but egg production will take several more months to return to normal.

Diamond Egg Ltd. Its chief executive. Asaduzzaman Mejbah said, the duration of the ongoing activities is ending on Wednesday. But in the interest of the consumer, this period needs to be extended by another 2 weeks.

It is to be noted that last October 17 Kaptan market and October 18 Tejgaon wholesale market started a 2-week special program of selling eggs at government rate.
