The proposal will be tabled in Parliament next week. The rest of the process will be completed immediately after this, BBC reported on Thursday. Australia's government says it will become the first country in the world to legislate to ban boys and girls under the age of 16 from using social media.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the legislation aims to reduce the harm social media is causing to Australian children. This is for moms and dads… they, like me, are concerned about our kids' safety online. I want Australian families to know that the Government is with you.

According to reports, there is still a lot of debate about this law on social media. However, the government said the ban will not apply to youth who are already on social media.

There will be no relaxation of age limit for children of parents who consent to this Act. The overall monitoring will be on the social media platform itself.

Prime Minister Albanese clarified that there will be no penalty for users. Australia's online activity regulator the e-Safety Commissioner will enforce the law.

The law will come into force 12 months after its passage and will be subject to review even after it comes into force. Some experts have criticized the ban on social media.

Many countries have tried such bans before. But the attempt failed. Experts have commented that this situation is because the way in which age is determined through social media is not in the right direction.
