Lifestyle Desk : A beautiful meaningful name is very important for people; Rather, meaning is more important than words in naming. It is the right of the newborn baby over the parents to have a meaningful name. Name has an influence on the individual in many aspects of human life. For this, Rasulullah (s.a.w.) used to change ugly or bad meaning names to beautiful names.
parents
In a hadith narrated on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA), Rasulullah (SAW) changed the name of a woman from 'Achiya' (disobedient) to 'Jamilah' (beautiful). (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 5497)
Muhammad Ibn Amr Ibn Ata (RA) said, 'Zainab bint Abu Salama (RA) asked him, what did you name your daughter? He said, I named him 'Barrah.' Then he said, Rasulullah (s.a.w.) has forbidden such names. I was also named 'Barrah'.
Rasulullah (SAW) said, Do not claim yourselves 'pure' (barrah meaning pure). Because Allah knows best who among you is virtuous. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 3953)
After the Hijrah, Rasulullah (SAW) changed the name of Madinah to 'Madinah' from Yasrib (reproach, reproach, censure).
Keep a good name
It is very important to give a good name to the child. Because people will be called by their own name and father's name on Judgment Day. If the name is bad, then those people will be ashamed on that day. On the authority of Abu Darda (RA), Rasulullah (SAW) said, 'On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and by the names of your fathers. So give yourselves beautiful names. (Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith: 4948)
In another hadith it was narrated from Ibn Umar (R.A.), Rasulullah (S.A.W.) said, 'Surely the most beautiful names in the sight of Allah Ta'ala are Abdullah and Abdur Rahman.' (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2132)
Not to have a bad name
Keeping a good name by avoiding a bad name is the special right of the child over the parents. Narrated by Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A.), 'The Companions asked Rasulullah (S.A.W.), O Messenger of Allah! We know about the rights of parents over children, but what rights do children have over parents? Rasulullah (s.a.w.) said, To keep his beautiful name and to teach good ideals.' (Shuabul Iman, Hadith: 8291)
In another hadith it is narrated from Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud (RA) that 'The Messenger of Allah (SAW) forbade a person from naming his slave or child Harb, Murrah, Walid (names meaning war, bitter, child respectively).' (Tabrani, Hadith: 9992)
For this, meaningless ugly names should be avoided. It is the exclusive duty of parents to name the newborn baby in accordance with the name of a Prophet-Messenger, Sahabah Kiram or an elderly person in consultation with learned scholars.
