A Jubo League leader named Saidur Rahman Babu (49) died seven days after being beaten to an electric pole in Natore. He died on Wednesday night while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The deceased Saidur Rahman is the son of deceased Matin Master of Darappur village of Sadar Upazila. Although he is a fisherman by profession, he was the president of Ward No. 8 Jubo League.
According to local sources and the family of the deceased, the attack on the house of Saidur Rahman and his brothers took place on August 5, the day of the fall of the Awami League government. Since then he and his three brothers have been in hiding. The miscreants arrested Saidur from a house in the area and took him to Darappur market at around 12 noon on October 30. There he was tied to an electric pole and beaten with rods and sticks. Later that afternoon he was sent to Natore Sadar Hospital with serious injuries. When the condition worsened, he was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at night. He died on Wednesday night while undergoing treatment there.
Several leaders and activists of Awami League, who did not wish to reveal their names, said that Saidur Rahman was beaten to death by local BNP leaders and activists under the leadership of Kabir Hossain Kangal, the vice-president of the district youth party. They demanded fair trial of this murder.
Kabir Hossain Kangal, vice-president of the district youth party, could not be reached despite several calls to his mobile phone to talk about this.
OC Mahbur Rahman of Natore Sadar Police Station said that no one told us about the beating at that time. The family is going to file a complaint today. If complaints are received, necessary action will be taken against the responsible persons after investigation.
