In Pabna's Ishwardi, 10 cows of the herd died suddenly due to poisoning. Locals slaughtered 4 more sick cows in this incident.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in Charruppur padma pasture of Pakshi union of the upazila.
Locals said that 7 cows of Mofazzal Biswas and Ratan Biswas, 1 of Joynal Biswas, 1 each of Bikul Pramanik and Ekbul Pramanik of Charruppur area died in this incident. Also 4 cows were slaughtered due to illness. They also said that the owners have suffered a loss of about 20 lakh rupees.
Ratan Biswas, the owner of the dead cow, said that like every day, on Wednesday morning, the shepherd goes to Padma pasture with the herd of cows. In the afternoon I suddenly got news that several cows in the herd are dying. Immediately went there and found 7 dead cows.
Shepherd Jillu Biswas said that while grazing cows, several cows of the herd suddenly entered the banana plantation of a man named Anis and started eating banana leaves. After seeing the matter, we immediately moved the cows. Shortly after that, when the cows suddenly fell ill, I informed the owner. Ten cows died by then. Later four more cows were slaughtered while sick.
Rumpa Begum, wife of Mofazzal Biswas, another cow owner, said, besides farming, cow rearing is our only source of income. My husband supports all the expenses of the family along with the children's education by rearing the cow. As so many cows died together, we became destitute.
Another owner named Zainal Biswas said, "We are demanding a fair investigation into this incident and if anyone is guilty, he should be punished." Also, I request the government to stand by the affected farmers like us.
Upazila Livestock Directorate Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Farooq Hossain said that it was initially thought that the leaves of the banana tree were poisoned. These cows died due to poisoning. Samples are collected from dead cows. The real reason will be known after the test. Other cows in the herd have been given first aid and medicine.
