International Desk: Iranian officials have met with American technology entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk in order to reduce tension and improve relations with the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump.
Confirming this, a US official said, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, met with Musk in New York on Monday.
The official, who did not want to be named, said the talks covered several important issues, such as Iran's nuclear program, the country's support for anti-Israel groups across the Middle East and the possibility of improving relations with the United States. However, there was no immediate decision between the two sides in the meeting, he said, and said that Mask was contacted by Iran.
Trump's transition team neither confirmed nor denied the meeting. Iran's UN mission also declined to comment on the matter.
Iran's move came shortly after the new administration named tough figures in key foreign policy positions, including Senator Marco Rubio as secretary of state and Republican leader Mike Waltz as national security adviser.
US intelligence officials say that Iran opposes Trump before the second term election. Now that he has been elected, tensions between Washington and Tehran are expected to increase.
In the first term, the Trump administration canceled the nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions. Also ordered the killing of late General Qassem Soleimani.
Meanwhile, the US Department of Justice revealed that there was a conspiracy from Iran to kill Trump during the election campaign. A man has also been charged with the crime, who he claims was commissioned by an Iranian government official to assassinate Trump.
US federal officials have described the "plot" as part of Iran's ongoing efforts to target US government officials, including Trump. For example, last summer, the US Department of Justice indicted a Pakistani man with ties to Iran for the assassination of American officials, they said. However, Iran's Foreign Ministry rejected this demand of the Americans.
Meanwhile, citing unnamed US officials, the Wall Street Journal reported that Iran told the Biden administration in a written message on October 14 that they would not try to kill Trump.
The Wall Street Journal reported that this was in response to the warning given earlier by the United States that an attempt to kill Trump would be considered a war. When contacted, Iran's UN mission said that no statement was made regarding the 'official exchange of messages between the two countries'.
Later, a statement from the mission said, 'Iran has pledged to prosecute the killing of martyr Genal Soleimani. But of course it will be done judicially in accordance with international law.'
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the right to have the final opinion on all matters of the state, has repeatedly expressed his displeasure with Trump, but the new reformist president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has kept the door open for talks with Trump to get rid of international sanctions.
