One rupee coin has been in use since 1992. The type and size of coins have changed over time. Lately though, the use of one rupee coins has declined a lot. But you will be surprised to know how much it costs to make one rupee coin. At least one recent report suggests so.

The one rupee coin made of stainless steel has a diameter of 21.93 mm, thickness of 1.45 mm and weight of 3.76 grams. According to the 2018 report, it costs 1 11 paise to make this one rupee coin. That is, the cost of making 1 rupee coins is higher than the market value!

Coins of other denominations cost slightly less to produce than one rupee coins. For example, two rupee coins cost 1.28 rupees. It costs Rs 3.69 to make a 5 rupee coin, and only 5.54 to make a 10 rupee coin.

The Reserve Bank of India issues coins and currency notes. But even if the value of money is high, it costs more to create coins. In fact, there are many security rules to be followed in printing notes. At the same time, the lifespan of paper notes is also very short. In comparison, coins last for years.
