Human chain in Gazipur for encroachment of graveyard

On Sunday (November 24), more than 150 women, men and children participated in the human chain in front of the factory under construction next to Dhaka Tangail highway. Earlier they also filed a complaint in the Kaliakor police station.

In human bonds, they said that this place is their family's only graveyard for the past 40 years. So far 30 people have been buried. But a few days ago some officials of a factory called New Fashion occupied the graveyard. They are constructing buildings there claiming to have purchased it.

The graves of our forefathers will not be broken and this structure will not be allowed. I have already filed a written complaint with Mouchak Army Camp, Deputy Commissioner and Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakair Police Station. We strongly condemn and protest against it.

"The family graveyard is next to our house," said Masood Rana, a victim of the human chain. It belonged to a factory called People's Ceramics, then they sold it to Sejat Suter, keeping 1 percent of the space for a cemetery. They kept the work going on for a long time by keeping a place in the cemetery. Now New Fashion says it bought it. Only then they break the graves and build buildings. We demand that the burial ground of parents and family should be kept intact along with the opportunity to bury the dead again."

Syed Zafar, AGM of that factory said, “We bought the place from a factory. We didn't know there was a grave there. They say, there are 30 Karbs but how can there be so many Karbs in such a small place. There can be maximum 2-3.”
