Health Desk: Leg muscle tension is commonly known as cramp or sudden muscle contraction. Muscle tension is medically termed as muscle pull, muscle soreness, strain, cramp, spasm etc. Some of the main reasons for this are:
1. Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can disrupt the body's electrolyte balance, which can cause muscle cramps.
2. Electrolyte deficiency: Lack of potassium, calcium, or magnesium in the body can cause muscle stiffness.
3. Overuse or exercise: Muscles may become strained due to overuse or heavy exercise.
4. Staying in the same posture for a long time: Moving too much in a short period of time or sitting in the same posture puts stress on the muscles.
5. Nerve problems: Any disease or abnormality of the nerves can cause muscle tension
A sudden tightening of the leg muscles (cramps) can be very painful. You can follow the steps below to get quick relief:
1. Stretch the muscles where the tension is, slowly stretch the muscles.
For example, if the back of the leg (calf muscle) feels tight, sit with your legs straight and pull your toes toward you.
2. Massage: Massage the affected area with light hands. It will increase blood circulation and reduce pain.
3. Use hot or cold packs: Apply warm water or a hot water bag to the affected area.
If there is swelling, then you can use cold packs.
4. Drink enough water: Dehydration can often lead to muscle cramps. So drink water.
5. Walk: Walk slowly. This will help relax the muscles.
6. You can eat foods rich in magnesium and potassium: bananas, vegetables, nuts, etc. They help strengthen muscles.
If the problem is chronic or frequent:
Consult a doctor: This could be a sign of an electrolyte imbalance or other physical problem. Stretching well before exercise and drinking enough water can prevent this problem.
