Jumbangla Desk: A woman sold her child to treat her husband who was shot in the students' movement. That money also runs out. He was not getting any government assistance as he had no citizenship certificate. Finally, the upazila administration took the responsibility of the couple.

Day laborer Abdur Rashid (30) was shot dead during the students' movement in Dinajpur. Unable to raise money for her husband's treatment, Abdur Rashid's wife Ratna sold her 3-day-old newborn daughter for just 25,000 rupees.

He started the treatment again with the money sold. But that money also runs out very quickly. Not having a Bangladeshi citizenship certificate (birth certificate or national identity card) did not receive any aid agencies or government financial assistance.

Finally after knowing the incident of Abdur Rashid, Tentulia upazila administration took all the responsibility of treatment including giving citizenship.

Fazle Rabbi, Executive Officer (UNO) of Tentulia Upazila, admitted Abdur Rashid to Tentulia Upazila Health Complex on Sunday night. Abdur Rashid still has bullets in his body, apart from that he is still not out of danger from the previous operation. He will be under the overall supervision of the upazila administration until he recovers physically. If necessary, more advanced treatment will be arranged and all expenses will be borne by UNO, the UNO said.

During the anti-discrimination student movement, Abdur Rashid was injured by police firing at the gate of the hospital while taking his pregnant wife to Dinajpur General Hospital on August 4. With the help of some people present at the scene, he somehow survived with treatment. When arthabhava and wife are nearing the final stages of childbearing, the physical position starts to deteriorate. He was admitted to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital on August 8 and Abdur Rashid underwent an operation there on August 9. The next day on August 10, Abdur Rashid's wife Rokeya Begum gave birth to a baby girl.

If the physical condition of the husband deteriorates, the treatment is stopped. Abdur Rashid's wife Ratna sold her 3-day-old newborn daughter for only 25 thousand rupees to save her husband's life. When the incident became known, the Abdur Rashid couple got the sold child back with the intervention of the administration.

UNO Faisal Raihan of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila said, 'After we came to know about the matter, we took necessary steps to return the child to her mother's lap.'

According to family and local sources, Abdur Rashid's house is in Maligach village of Tentulia upazila Bhajanpur union. Abdul Rashid's mother (Rashida Begum) died about 10 years ago. Father Nazrul Islam married second. Abdur Rashid once quarreled and left the house due to disagreements on various issues. Later, he worked as a daily wage laborer in Rajbari area of Dinajpur district.

After investigation, it is known that since Abdur Rashid does not have birth certificate or citizenship certificate, under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner, the UNO of Tentulia immediately took the initiative to solve the problem in order to confirm his identity. He talks to Abdur Rashid, who is shot, injured and mentally broken, to find out his permanent address. It is known through various efforts that this Abdur Rashid is the son of Nazrul Islam of Maligach area of Bhajanpur Union of Tentulia Upazila. However, tractor worker Abdur Rashid has been living with his wife and children in a rented house in Rajbari area of Dinajpur district for several years.

Abdur Rashid said, I lost my mother when I was a child and could not get an identity card or birth certificate due to family problems and various conspiracies. My wife sold the child for my treatment. But as I am not a citizen I do not get any support. I still have four bullets in my body. Everyone is afraid to treat me because of lack of identity. When I told the UNO sir on the phone, he himself came to the council and listened to all my words. Later he made all the arrangements himself to give my identity card and admitted me to the hospital.

Abdur Rashid said, I am very happy to be a citizen of new Bangladesh. Although the country became independent, I could not see it yet, because of the four walls of the hospital. I want the country to run well. Let the people of the country be in peace.

Fazle Rabbi, UNO of Tentulia, said that after knowing the tragic events like the identitylessness of Abdur Rashid, who was shot and seriously injured, and the sale of his wife's child for the treatment of her husband, with the help of me and the local people, including the chairman of the Union Parishad, he was given the citizenship of Bangladesh. He still has bullets in his body. Apart from this, he is still not free of fear from the previous operation . He will be under the overall supervision of the upazila administration until he recovers physically. If necessary, advanced treatment will be arranged as directed by superiors.

Panchagarh District Commissioner Md. Sabet Ali said that because Abdur Rashid has a local identity, work is underway to give him birth certificate and national identity card. A list of those who were martyred and injured in the movement has been sought. We have also sent Abdur Rashid's name to that list. He is being supervised by Tentulia Upazila administration.
